For the author, a young Missouri lad of eighteen and newly graduated from high school, the reality of war loomed against his young innocents. Hollywood romanticized war; however, soon Joseph E. Bloomer would witness the truth. Surreal terrors, played out against a backdrop of the exotic beauty of the Pacific Islands, were nothing like the ones portrayed in the movies. In the Pacific Ocean, in the midst of WWII, Bloomer found himself on what could be described as 'The Forgotten Ship'. The ship was so considered because it was often left alone in highly dangerous situations, near key pacific islands, during lengthy and raging battles. In this book vivid battle stories of the daily ironies of life are described, often with gentle humor. While in the Navy, Joseph attended Diesel school. After WWII he earned a B.A. in English from Southwest Missouri State University. Subsequently, he began a career as a test driver for mechanical engineering at Boeing, then later pursued a career in wholesale office supplies. Retired, he now lives in the beautiful Ozarks where he enjoys spending time with his family, gardening and fishing.
